Woof…Third generation IPhone for Rs. 8400/......Its All Rumours..

by Vinit Srivastva

Now this is really unexpected ! The next Generation 3G enabled Iphone is going to cost you…hold your breath…$199 or mere INR 8400/- . Now is That a real news?????

The story that has been floating around for a month now has finally been confirmed. Vodafone will launch the iPhone in India and other countries such as Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey (reports Business Standard)

The price of the iPhone has been unconfirmed. Earlier it had been reported that phone would cost anywhere between Rs. 27, 200 – Rs. 28, 000. That price makes it relatively unattractive when compared with the price that the grey market offers the phone at (around 20k for the 8GB). Incidentally the 3G iPhone (which is going to be launched in August) will probably be launched in India as well.

The Economic Times reports that Apple was in talks with both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar for bringing iPhone into India. “However, Vodafone has larger number of subscribers in metros and ‘A’ circles who are more likely to use the luxury phone. These subscribers are high data users. So, Vodafone is ready with a pool of customers who can use this device,” said a telecom expert.

Talking about the price, Vodafone has said that it would be “competitive”. So one can expect the price to be at 16k (the current price for the base model in the US) + 5% for custom duties on Cell Phones + a minimal premium = Rs. 18, 000. That’s my guess. Reliance recently launched iStores carrying Apple products which are very competitively priced. The standard MacBook is about as expensive as one in the US. So keeping that in mind, I don’t think they would want to keep the iPhone at a price that is completely out of reach (such as the one speculated initially).

Also they are getting fantastic PR :) - I doubt they’d spend truckloads on advertising (which should make the price more competitive). Anyone who probably ever wanted an iPhone possibly knows about its launch already.

The move is also perfectly timed. With number portability around the corner, you can expect consumers to flock to Vodafone outlets and switch to Vodafone’s network just to use the iPhone (and be locked in by horrendous schemes). Vodafone’s customer care incidentally is quite crappy. The dog doesn’t fool me.

A laptop with 3 screens

by Vinit Srivastva

Here’s a pretty neat laptop setup from Acme. It’s a big machine, but for the extra weight you will get two additional screens, which turns this ordinary laptop into a three-screened laptop. I wish they had spent some more resources on designing the system though…

Futuristic Laptop Concept

by Vinit Srivastva

Compenion is a futuristic laptop concept that boasts two OLED touchscreen displays and a modular design. No word yet on if this concept will go into production. More pictures after the break.

You can tap away by hand or use the “senstylus” pen to control it, and through a series of docking stations the Compenion will adapt to the environment where you’re using it. For example, the home dock might have a projector for viewing video, while the office might include ergonomic stuff like an external keyboard

5 Future Cell Phone Technologies

by Vinit Srivastva

Future cell phone technologies could replace computers, PDAs, and even UMPCs — they include the GoForce 5500 graphics chipset, augmented reality, and more. View them all after the break.

NVIDIA GoForce 5500 Mobile

NVIDIA demonstrated its amazing GoForce 5500 mobile platform at 3GSM, and ShinyShiny was there to give us a first look. This chipset is capable of 3D games and high-definition video playback.

Somewhat ironically, NVIDIA seems to have decided to show it all off on the biggest monitor they could get their hands on. Although that may have ultimately been for the best

Augmented Reality

Tired of the games on your cell phone? Then check out “Arcade Reality”. It’s basically software that uses your phone’s camera to bring ordinary objects such as the ground to life.

Aiming your phone at bad guys that appear in the space around you, it kind of combines the active nature of a Wiimote with a light gun like the one that came with the original NES

Poppin’ Joystick

The Poppin’ Joystick concept looks to make cell phone games a lot easier to play — incorporating a pop-out analog joystick.

..if stopping substantially short of making it full-out game comfortable. Will we see this design on phones in the future? Who knows, but it certainly looks better than most phone’s game controls out there now

NTT DoCoMo’s Solar Powered Cell Phone

According to TheRawFeed, NTT DoCoMo has developed the world’s first solar-powered cell phone, complete with a GameBoy Advance-inspired design. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.

This phone actually includes the solar cells on the external side of the clamshell—therefore not needing any other devices to use the sun’s rays to charge. On a side note: this would be great for those of us that constantly forget their cellphone chargers regularly

PicoP Laser Projector

Alexander Tokman of Microvision has developed a “miniature laser based projector display, called PicoP.” This projector is small enough to fit inside your cell phone and “can display a laptop-sized quality image on surfaces just half a meter away”. More information here. Video after the jump
